Differences in boys’ and girl’s play

Girls’ and boys’ behavior differs from quite early in childhood. Even though they are not fully aware of their

gender roles yet boys’ and girls’ play patterns are quite different already at an age of 3-4 years: Boys tend to be more physical and are attracted to rumble and tumble games, whereas girls are more quiet and play more with teddies and dolls.

The same pattern is repeated in their esthetic preferences: girls and boys draw different things, boys drawing themes of power and competition (monsters, vehicles and weapons) whereas girls paint more natural settings, people or animals. In a study for which children aged 8-11
were asked to draw water, the girls drew quiet rivers and oceans whereas the boys drew stormy seas.

Playground Equipment

From the mainstream of the research done on the behavioural differences between boys and girls we could focus on five main differences in girls’ and boys’ behaviour:

Girls Boys
Couples, triples Gangs, groups
Negotiation (dislike conflicts) Hierarchy (leader decides)
Intimacy (driven by friendship) Performance (driven by
doing well)
Acceptance Admiration
Esthetics of beauty Esthetics of victory

This very simplified model could explain one prejudice, if nothing else: Why are girls so intrigant? If they have found their triple, negotiated their way out of the next play managing to avoid conflicts and everything fits beautifully (it might well have taken some time) there is nothing as annoying as somebody asking if they can be in the game with you! You might need to start all over again,
settling things.

For the boys this situation does not really exist: there is one leader and if you don’t accept him, stay away or fight like a man! You win the fight, you’re the new leader. You loose, you stay and obey!

The difference between boys’ and girls’ groups seems to be mainly, that girl groups have a negotiation character, to avoid conflicts, whereas boys have a hierarchy structure.

Some of the things that make the boys and girls different can also cause trouble: If you like to be in pairs or triples as girls you are more easy to be harassed away from for instance the play area. Often you would see a school
yard possessed by the very physical boys and the girls standing around in little groups, watching the boys. This would be true for the computer room in the recreational centre as well.

Playground Equipment

This has lead to a number of schools having part of the lessons segregated, and with positive results. The girls claim that they learn more in these lessons, when they are not interrupted by the boys. They state that they feel free to speak and get heard more with no loud boys in the class room.

The fact that girls would more often stay in couples or triples whereas boys would form bigger groups is an important observation also for the playground planning: Often you would have playgrounds being very open with play equipment meant for many children to play on.
It is recommendable, though, to have little corners for small groups of two-three to welcome girls. Girls move less than boys in the first place and are in need of more activity, especially when they grow into teenagers.

In Austria and England playgrounds have been made with play spheres specifically made for girls. The reasoning behind it is, that boys would possess any room anyway, as they are very visible in their physical and loud behavior. The girls would often not be able to gain their own
space with the boys around.

This being said it might be worthwhile remembering, that one of the most popular school yard games is still “girls-chase-the-boys”….or “boys-chase-the girls”.
